CHAPTER FIVE
Thankfully, nothing happened that night.
Nor the next one, or the next one after that.
The days were largely uneventful, too. I resented the fact that I felt too uncomfortable leaving them alone to go out for the next three days, resented Thomas and Jessicaâs asshole husband, (ex-husband, I guess now), for forcing this situation on us. I figured, if something was going to happen, itâd be at some point over the next few days.
On the one hand, I was glad to be wrong.
On the other hand, now I was kind of more worried than ever, because that feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop only gets worse when the shoe doesnât drop. When were they going to do something? Were they going to do anything at all? Being in the dark fucking sucked. But as the fourth day dawned, I knew I couldnât linger any longer. We worked out how much food we had and after some basic rationing determination, by the time the fourth day came, we were down to three days of food left between the five of us.
Kind of a scary prospect.
So we needed more food, and so I went hunting with Hannah.
We stalked through the forest, following footprints in the snow of a deer. I had the rifle, she had the bow and quiver of arrows. I had at least taken the opportunity to have her practice with them out in the back over the past few days. Susan had drawn up several targets for us to use. Hannah was a natural. She had good aim and great hand/eye coordination. Honestly, all she needed was real-world experience and more practice to help it feel smooth and natural.
âThere,â I whispered, but I think she saw it before I did.
She drew an arrow and notched it smoothly, aimed, waited, waited...fired. The arrow snapped through the air and pierced the deerâs skull, killing it instantly. It flopped to the ground. Hannah smiled as we set off.
âExcellent shot,â I said.
âThanks,â she replied. âHey Chris, you ever get paranoid that we wonât need you anymore?â she asked with a smirk on her face. âAnd weâd kick your ass out?â
âWould you do that?â I asked with perfect seriousness. It was one of my favorite responses in the face of someone kind of being an ass, even in jest. Probably because it very often caught people off guard and tripped them up.
It happened with Hannah. She looked at me, losing her smile. âI...no,â she said.
Now I smirked. âGood.â
She sighed and hit me in the shoulder. âYou dick. You made me feel bad.â
âOh gee, I made you feel bad after joking about kicking me out of my own house? God, Iâm such an asshole,â I replied.
She growled as we reached the door. âYeah, yeah, fine. But no, I wouldnât. Not that I could, but even if it was in my power for some reason, no. Youâre actually a pretty good guy. You donât try to control us...even if it seems like some of the others would really prefer that.
